Several grants from the Love in the Midst
of Tragedy Advance have been disbursed to assist people affected by the
attacks last September and resulting events. Funds are being used to provide
counseling for people in the New York City area who have been referred
by local United Methodist clergy; to provide additional supplies for the
food pantry at a local United Methodist Church which is serving many people
who lost loved ones and jobs; to support the work of the Greater New Jersey
Annual Conference in meeting the needs of New Jersey residents affected
by the tragedies; and to support peacemaking and reconciliation initiatives
between Muslims and Christians in the United States and in Pakistan. Relief
efforts continue in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees in Pakistan. UMCOR
and its partners in Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan are working to
provide shelter and essential supplies to those who have been displaced
by the war. Your gifts to Love in the Midst of Tragedy, Advance #901125-3
make all this work possible.
An emergency relief grant is being sent
to the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, which is part of the Methodist family.
Funds will be used to help with relief efforts following the devastation
of Cyclone Waka which struck the islands on New Year's Day. Many homes
were destroyed and most of the crops were devastated. Please give to Asia
Floods, Advance #229650-4.
